St. Gregory’s College Edged Out Old Rivals Kings College

27 FEB 2015

The old rivals met at the Onikan stadium where they played numerous times in the past. This set the match in a very historic backdrop and the young lads equally wrote their own chapter in the long running annals of historical rivalry.

Old Boys of both schools as well as dignitaries turned out to watch these two prestigious schools rekindle old rivalry. In addition, both schools brought hundreds of students to support the teams from the stands.

For the first 15 minutes of the game, both teams strived to get the advantage but it was not coming forth. This changed in the 17th minute when St. Gregory’s College Okey Olugbo opened the score line. St Gregs scored two more quick goals in the next three minutes and the game looked dead and buried for Kings College.

First, Okey doubled the lead on 19th minute while teammate Afe Eric scored the third goal for St. Gregory’s College but the Kings College boys did not give up the fight easily as Captain, Diakete Diaby converted from the penalty spot in the 26th  minute after a foul was committed in the 18 yard box and this brought the game to 3-1 at half time.

But immediately after the break, Obi David, current highest goal scorer of the tournament was brought on for St. Gregory’s and he scored the 4th goal within minutes of coming on. This sealed the game for St. Gregory’s College as they went through to the semifinals comfortably to make it the second time in two years that St. Gregory’s College will deny Kings College the chance of progressing in the GTBank Masters Cup.

Onikan Stadium lit up as the final whistle went off with St. Gregory’s college students and Old Boys rejoicing. Mr. Segun Agbaje was full smiles as he left the stadium. Though the Ikoyi Boys won the match, Kings College is patiently waiting for another time to when both rivals will meet again.
